How to Create Your Own Position at Work - The Muse

How to Create Your Own Position at Work - The MuseHow to Create Your Own Position at Work So tzu siche you are, coasting along at your current job. You enjoy your work, and you especially like your company. The thing is, youre feeling a little restless lately. Perhaps you know your job so well that you could do it in your sleep. Or maybe you dont see much opportunity for growth or movement in your department. That little voice in your head is saying its ready for new challenges, but the thought of leaving your awesome company is really daunting. Theres got to be a better way, right? Before you departure polishing up your resume, its worth thinking about how you can create your own opportunity at your current company. But how do you do this? Where do you start? How do you even get the right people to listen to you? Read on for five easy steps for creating a new job at your current company.1. Define a Current Business Problem and Match Your Skills to ItFor your boss and company to cons ider shifting your role, theyll want to know whats in it for them. So, look around. What are some of the biggest challenges and problems that need to be solved at your company? Perhaps your department lacks a comprehensive training program, or maybe no one has developed a much-needed social media strategy. Maybe the marketing department is down a person who has never been replaced. Try matching up unterstellung opportunities to your own expertise, and think about what you can offer. 2. Create a Detailed PlanNow that youve identified a new role or opportunity you could fill, youll want to create a plan. First, create a thorough job description, along with a set of goals for this position within the first year. (To speak your boss language, create it using the same format that your company uses already.) Spelling out exactly how this role will look will give management a better idea of what you can accomplish. Then, put some thought into what will happen to your current role- will you keep some of your tasks and transition some of them to others, or will your boss need to hire a replacement? Remember, if thats the case, youll need to make an especially compelling argument as to why your new role is needed or how it can impact the business. On that note3. Pitch the Idea to Your SupervisorBy this point, you might be so excited about your idea that you want to run straight to your boss boss (or higher). However, the best place to start is usually your immediate supervisor. He or she will hopefully be a great initial sounding board. Start by scheduling a meeting during a quiet time when your supervisor will be less distracted. Next, present a simple outline of your idea, starting with the business problem you will solve. Be sure to mention your strong interest in developing your skills and owning your career. After all, youve already mastered your current job, and youre ready for new challenges now. It also wouldnt hurt to mention how much you enjoy working for your current company and how youd like to stay there long-term.Also, dont be afraid to ask your supervisor to punch holes in this idea youll want to be prepared to answer challenging questions if your idea gets to the next level. If your supervisor agrees that your idea could work, then ask about the next step- i.e., the right people to talk to in order to make the job a reality. On the other hand, if your manager shows resistance, ask him or her to think about it some more and then get back to you with specific feedback. Maybe your idea could still work with a little tweaking. Or perhaps your supervisor is afraid of backfilling your role, and you need to work on a better transition plan. If the idea is flat-out rejected, dont be afraid to talk to a mentor or trusted colleague who has a fresh perspective- he or she may have a different idea for approaching matters (or other thoughts on how you could shift your role). 4. Revise Your Idea and Present it to the Decision MakersOnce your bos s has green-lighted the idea and pointed you to the right folks to talk to next, take another look at your plan. Youll want to tailor your approach based on the people you are meeting with. If youre meeting with a high-level director, you might want to pare down the details and focus on results. If youre meeting with human resources, youll want to include some specific experiences that showcase your untapped talent. No matter what, again youll want to focus on how this new role will be a great thing for the company- and why youre exactly the right person to take it on. 5. Be PatientEven if everyone from the custodial staff to the CEO thinks your idea is wonderful, that doesnt necessarily mean that youll be starting your new job within two weeks. Some ideas need to be vetted with the right people before they can take flight, whereas others may simply need the right funding to become a reality. And unfortunately, some ideas may depend on the right timing. Your organization may need to wrap up current strategic projects before the right resources can be redirected to your idea. But remember If your idea is worth doing and youd really enjoy it, try to hang in there until the timing is right- it just might pay off in the end. In the meantime, use that waiting period to brush up on those skills youll use in your new job. You never know when youll be tapped to make that jump.Have you ever created your own opportunity at your current company? What did you do? The Wisdom of Sending Employees Somewhere Awful

The Wisdom of Sending Employees Somewhere Awful The Wisdom of Sending Employees Somewhere Awful Theres the broadening of perspectives, the exposure to other cultures and their professionals, the excitement of new venues and opportunities, fresh synergies, glimpses of other ways of getting things done and other learning experiences, even just the change of scene, especially to an exotic one- not to mention the gratitude and commitment expressed by participating employers and employees alike Great stuff Solid idea. But then I thought about my current situation in a similar, but self-sponsored circumstance Working on the road, abroad, first in Japan, now in Taiwan. Indeed, it has been and will continue to be a very positive professional development opportunity- certainly in terms of providing themes and context for some of the articles I write. My interactions with locals have also revealed stunning contrasts, e.g., between the amazing customer service in Japan and the service at the l ast place at home we will ever shop at again.Yes, thats all very nice. However, theres one twist Id like to give the idea of overseas professional development programs and excursions, as a recommendation Send employees to awful places- places that are too hot, too cold, too dangerous, too boring, too ugly, too polluted, too noisy, too crowded, or too infested with snakes, scorpions or spiders. Almost anything awful will do.My RealLet me give just one clear, real-life, personal example to make this point I am currently writing this in my extremely comfortable and clean, albeit compact and simple budget bed and breakfast room in Tainan, Taiwan- this countrys oldest city which features lots of charming old stuff, including temples galore. What is and has been making it extremely comfortable and pleasant is, in addition to the great deal I got on the room for two weeks, the dial on my wall that allows me to adjust my room temperature- downward, to the 16 degrees Celsius that I, and some other bigger guys I know, thrive on. (Thats 60.8 Fahrenheit- way too cold for most women, except channel swimmers and Polar Bear club swimmers.) Outside, it is almost August 1st and was blisteringly hot and humid all day. How hot and humid? No joke- too hotmid to breathe (without noticeable strain). Now, thats awful. So, whats so good about awful? The answer is obvious Ill get more work done, which is all to the good for both Recruiter.com and me. When I say more work, I mean, for example, work done in advance, as a hedge against unforeseen disruptions, such as crashed computers (which has happened a lot this past year) or disruption of Internet service. No temptations of sweaty sightseeing, going out to meet and mingle with locals, planting myself at some sidewalk cafe or noodle shop and watch the girls on or off scooters go by. No inclination to go back to must see places to take better photos, hunt for bargains in narrow, hot and busy streets or sit idly by the steaming wide river that runs through the city. Nope. None of that- in this kind of heat- can compete with bracing myself with a couple of cooled pillows typing and thinking away (usually in the reverse order) under a chilled canopy of conditioned air.Justifying Awful with Scientific PrincipleThe underlying psychological-physiological principle that makes this send them somewhere awful approach wonderful is simple Pleasure, indeed, intense pleasure, can take the form of relief from pain. So, send employees somewhere that is in some sense painful to be and then switch off the pain. Once there and in the end, theyll thank you for it, if you are the employer, or revel in the relief, as one of the employees. In psychology this is called negative reinforcement- which must not, as it all too commonly is, be confused with punishment, because it is in fact the opposite it is the termination of punishment or an aversive stimulus, as a reward for behavior (in this case, a reward for ceasing to do anything else bu t work, once there). If you imagine that employees will resent what may be perceived as bait and switch, just consider what the ultimate switch is to something very pleasant- a very nice, maybe elegant hotel suite (preferably at a classy hotel without a pool). How can anybody resent that- especially if the company is paying for the switch? Sure, some will have had their misguided hearts set on seeing the vaunted local sights and sites, but unless the employer deliberately misrepresents the locale and its conditions, in the end, the employees can only blame themselves for not having done their due diligence in researching the destination before agreeing to go there. One Caveat for Employers and HR ManagersHence, it is critical for employers and HR managers to avoid promising any undeliverables. Just let nature- and misunderstanding- take its course. One favorable factor, of course, is human nature- specifically, laziness as a trait, deterrent and obstacle to due diligence. If employers cant count on it, at least they can hope for it.Of course, there are limits to acceptable awful. However, even though degree of awfulness may be difficult to gauge, it is easy enough to identify the most awful overseas professional development locales.Any place from which employees wont voluntarily returnespecially one from which they wont return alive.

Integrator

Integrator Army Job MOS 35T Military Intelligence Systems Maintainer/Integrator The Military Intelligence  Systems Maintainer/Integrator makes sure the equipment used by Army military intelligence, including computers and networks, is kept in top working condition.   This job is categorized as military occupational specialty (MOS) 35T.  These soldiers are a crucial part of the Armys intelligence community.   Duties of MOS 35T These soldiers maintain, test, and repair communications equipment, including military intelligence computers and networks. They assess and extract data from fixed, portable, and wireless communication devices, and test military intelligence sensors and systems before, during, and after missions. .   This job is responsible for making detailed tests on electrical and mechanical equipment using such tools as multimeters, oscilloscopes, signal generators, spectrum analyzers, wire diagrams, logic and signal flow charts, technical manuals, troubleshooting charts, performance aids, schematic and logic diagrams, and other measurement and diagnostic equipment. They maintain electronic warfare and intercept receivers, processing and storage equipment, and computer peripherals.  Higher-ranking soldiers supervise lower grade personnel and assist in conducting formal and informal structured on-the-job training programs. At times they may be called upon to act as assistant instructors at the service school. Training for MOS 35T Job training for a military intelligence systems maintainer/integrator requires 10 weeks of Basic Combat Training (boot camp) and 42 weeks of Advanced Individual Training (AIT) practicing with equipment. AIT for military intelligence soldiers takes place at Fort Huachuca in Arizona. Its one of the longer advanced training programs, since the material is so sensitive.   Some of the technical skills you’ll learn include electronic principles, maintenance procedures and computer networks, hardware and software. Youll also learn the basics of maintaining equipment used for intelligence gathering.   Qualifying for MOS 35T if youre interested in becoming a military intelligence systems maintainer/integrator in the Army, you need a score of at least 112 on the skilled technical (ST) area of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) tests. Normal color vision is required (meaning no colorblindness), and soldiers in MOS 35T must be American citizens.   Youll also need to be eligible for a top-secret security clearance from the Department of Defense, since youll be handling highly sensitive military intelligence information. This requires a background check of finances and character; a criminal history or past drug abuse may be grounds for denying such a clearance. In addition to obtaining a top-secret security clearance, neither you nor your spouse can have immediate family members residing in a country where physical or mental coercion is known to be a common practice. Soldiers in this job and their spouses cant have commercial or vested interest in such a country. As with most military intelligence jobs, youre not eligible to be a  military intelligence systems maintainer/integrator  if you ever served in the Peace Corps. This is to ensure that the separation between the Peace Corps humanitarian mission and the military is clear. Since Peace Corps volunteers sometimes work in areas hostile to the United States, if an enemy thought those volunteers were collecting intelligence information, it could put them in jeopardy.   And finally, you need to have a record free of conviction by court-martial, and free of civil convictions other than minor traffic violations.

The 5 Skills of Highly Valuable and Highly Productive Employees

The 5 Skills of Highly Valuable and Highly Productive Employees The 5 Skills of Highly Valuable and Highly Productive Employees Its no surprise managers rate their top performers as their most valuable employees. VitalSmarts latest research sought to measure just how much more valuable top performers are and exactly what it is they do that makes them so valuable. Our study of more than 1,500 employees found that top performers arent just a little bit more valuable. Rather, both managers and peers say top performers are three times more valuable than the average employee. Top performers also do 61 percent of the total work done in their departments. In our study, we asked managers and peers to rate their direct reports and coworkers on a 10-point scale. Then, we asked them a couple of questions: Do tens work harder or smarter? and Do top performers work habits add to their stress or reduce it? Both managers and peers agreed that tens work smarter, not harder, than the average employee. To top it off, tens are also significantly less stressed. In fact, 83 percent of leaders and 77 percent of peers said a tens work habits reduce  their stress. How do these top performers do it? What stress-reducing, performance-enhancing habits do they practice routinely and regularly? Below are five productivity practices of highly valuable and highly productive employees: Collect everything that owns attention:  Capture all commitments, tasks, ideas, and projects rather than keeping them in your head. Use just a few capture tools you keep with you all the time, such as lists, apps, email, etc. Decide what your stuff means to you:  Clarify whether the items youve captured have an action or not. If they do, be very clear about what the very next action is and who should take it. Without a next action, the task will likely languish on a list  or somewhere in your brain. In both cases, the task is taking up precious space  that could be occupied by more enjoyable and fulfilling items. Use the two-minute rule:  If an action can be completed in two minutes or less, do it immediately. Dont defer. The time youll waste letting simple actions occupy your attention and to-do list is not worth it. Do more of the right things by reflecting in the right moments:  Rather than diving into your messy inbox first thing, take two minutes to review your daily calendar and your action lists. This reflection ensures you make the best decisions about how to use your time. Review weekly:  Keep a sacred, non-negotiable meeting with yourself every week to re-sync, get current, and align your daily work and projects with your higher-level priorities. The message in this research is that a small number of self-management practices can change a persons life. In fact, when you compare people who consistently demonstrate these key productivity skills with those who dont, productive people are: - 55 times less likely to start projects that never get finished; - 21 times less likely to experience tasks and responsibilities falling through the cracks; - unlikely to ever miss deadlines or assignments; - 18 times less likely to feel overwhelmed; - and 9 times less likely to feel depressed. These skills are also extremely beneficial to the organization, as they dramatically improve performance. Productivity is more than just being busy. Employees who learn to manage their workloads quickly and efficiently dont just get more done â€" they get more of the right things done. They stop carrying the weight and anxiety of work, and they free up their time and mental capacity for new and better ideas. Its a win-win for both the individual and the business. 6 reasons recruiters say theyll toss your resume in the trash

6 reasons recruiters say they'll toss your resume in the trash 6 reasons recruiters say they'll toss your resume in the trash Most professionals nowadays know that a clear (and proofread) resume can help them move along during the job application process. But what if you think you submitted the most perfectly edited resume with loads of experience and you still don’t make the cut? It turns out that there are plenty of smaller mistakes that make recruiters reconsider adding you to the “yes” pile. Six of them weighed in on the problems they see with resumes all the time that keep applicants from getting ahead.1. It’s way too longLyssa Barber, the former head of recruitment at UBS Asset Wealth Management, says that one of the largest issues she sees with job applicants is that they’ll submit a resume that “indulges the candidate, but [doesn’t] entice the hiring manager.”“Even if you’re the CEO, you don’t need a five-page CV,” she notes. “I’ve received eight to 10-page efforts, and they just go straight into the reject pile. Skip the out-there fonts, double-check your hyperlinks and keep the language simple.3. It doesn’t include keywordsCandidates need to make it easy for recruiters to find what they’re looking for, especially since they’re scanning hundreds of resumes every day.“When I look at a CV I immediately look for words that relate to the role I am working on,” says Sarah Rawcliffe, a talent manager at Get My First Job. “For example, for a childcare role I would want to see a placement [at a] nursery, work experience in primary school or even babysitting for a family friend, anything that shows some kind of interest in the industry they have applied for.”Don’t make it hard for recruiters to connect the dots as to why you’re a good fit for the role. They may give up and look elsewhere.4. It has the wrong tone“Some candidates are giving great thought to the editing of their resume â€" checking for typos, verb tenses, and verbiage â€" but not considering tone,” explains Laura Mazzullo, founder of East Side Staffing. “I would recommend reading the resume aloud keeping personal brand at the forefront of your consideration. ‘Does this resume reflect my values and perspective? Is this how I want to come across to potential employers?’”Mazzullo once received a resume that said, “I am the BEST…” with all-caps included. Unsurprisingly, she says that’s a huge no-no.5. It’s not ordered by level of relevance or impactIn keeping with the theme of making it easy for hiring managers and recruiters, make sure you put the most important or relevant information at the top of your resume and throughout each position.“Your resume should highlight your most prized accomplishments in the first bullets and day-to-day towards the bottom,” says recruiter Taylor Carrington. “Structure the resume [from] greatest to least impactf ul for each position you held.”6. It doesn’t tell a storyIf a recruiter looks at your resume and can’t tell what your career “story” is and generally where you’re hoping to go, that could lead to a “no.”“No matter the level of the candidate, [from] someone just out of college or a very senior executive, it’s okay if someone works in various industries and jumps around a bit and gains different experiences,” says Eva Freidan, a product leadership recruiter at Facebook. “But at the end of the day, what is the common thread throughout this person’s career?”Freidan recommend taking some time to write a paragraph or two explaining your overall career arc. If it’s not clear to you, it certain won’t be clear to a recruiter who’s scanning your resume quickly. When it comes to resume writing, the most important thing is to think about what’ll make the hiring manager want to move your resume into the “yes” pile. Is It Ever Okay to Burn a Professional Bridge

Is It Ever Okay to Burn a Professional Bridge Is It Ever Okay to Burn a Professional Bridge Although there are many occasions where burning a bridge is probably going to hurt you more than it hurts your employer, there are some situations where it will actually be your best bet â€" or even your only possible course of action. Just what situations would warrant burning a bridge? Here are five  of them: 1. You Literally Hate Your Job Robert Tew once said, Respect yourself enough to walk away from anything that no longer serves you, grows you, or makes you happy. Life is far too short to work in a job that makes you miserable day in and day out. Some might argue that your attitude affects your job, and this is definitely true to a certain extent. However, having to force a positive attitude each day just to cover up the fact that you are miserable is only fooling everyone but yourself. Do yourself a favor and find a job that makes you happy. 2. You Dont Believe in the Organization It is absolutely impossible to sincerely pour your heart and soul into work you dont believe in. Maybe you never shared your organizations values, or maybe youve started losing your faith, but whatever the case, its hard to be great when you disagree with your own mission. Just like a relationship, you can grow apart from  an employer. You may have shared the organizations  ideals and beliefs when you first started, but over time, that may have changed. And guess what? Thats perfectly okay. Accept it and move on. 3. You Tried Something New and Hated It Perhaps you moved from a corporate recruiting role to an agency recruiting role. You thought you would be okay with running a full desk. You thought you would be okay with the external variables that affect your ability to fill a position. You thought, Hey, I have an opportunity to make more money. This is great. Except, you tried it, and you hated it. Or perhaps you found that it just wasnt your cup of tea. Sometimes, we have to make these types of career decisions to find out what we  do or do not want to do for the rest of  our lives. 4. Your Work Environment Is Toxic A toxic work environment means more than just hating your job â€" it means you wake up dreading the workplace drama that you will have to deal with each day. You have a boss who constantly micromanages you or belittles you. Your coworkers do not have your back, and they often make the environment borderline hostile through their speech and actions. The toxicity is sucking you in, and you find yourself beginning to feed into it. If this sounds like your life, its definitely time to leave. Why subject yourself to a highly toxic environment? 5. Your Position Is in Danger This is probably the most obvious scenario in which you may have to burn a bridge. Perhaps your organization is going through an acquisition or  merger, your department is downsizing, or you find that you simply dont have enough work to do to keep yourself busy all day. These are all signs that the existence of  your position is in question. When it comes to dealing with this situation, its best to jump ship before you are thrown off of the ship. Beat them to the punch. At the end of the day, you have to look out for yourself. If your position is facing potential elimination, you need to make a choice to burn the bridge now or get burned later when the inevitable happens. â€" Kristina Evans is  the director of HR and recruiting for Exactor.

Employers will also thank him for using a simple, legible font. The effective personal summary in this sample presents a brief overview of essential information. In this job, you may handle some very serious situations, and employers want to know you understand that. Ensure your resume appears professional and includes only relevant information. Check for typos, spelling mistakes, and formatting errors. You never want your resume to present a low-effort appearance.Following the example of the peer advisor resume sample, include solid experience and relevant personal qualities. Marine Corps Enlisted Promotion System Explained

Marine Corps Enlisted Promotion System Explained Marine Corps Enlisted Promotion System Explained The Marine Corps handles advancement based on its needs. Making advanced ranks in the Marines goes strictly by the numbers needed in the higher ranks. In the Marines, an E-4 (Corporal) has to earn his stripes and added responsibility, however, the promotions to the ranks of E-2 and E-3 are pretty automatic, barring any serious offense. Promotions to E-4 and above are competitive and are based on specific vacancies within the Marine Corps’ jobs. Marine Corps Enlisted Slots The Marine Corps takes the number of slots it has for each enlisted rank above the rank of E-3 and allocates them to the different enlisted jobs. In order to promote someone above the rank of E-3, there must be a vacancy. For example, if an E-9 retires in a certain military occupational specialty (or MOS, what the Marines call their jobs), that means that one E-8 can be promoted to E-9, and that opens an E-8 slot, so one E-7 can be promoted to E-8, and so forth. The enlisted ranks are the following: E-1, Private, Pvt.E-2, Private First Class, PFC.E-3, Lance Corporal, LCpl.E-4, Corporal, Cpl.E-5, Sergeant, Sgt.E-6, Staff Sergeant, SSgt.E-7, Gunnery Sergeant, GySgt.E-8. Master Sergeant, MSgt. First Sergeant, 1Sgt. Decentralized Promotions in the Marines (E-2 and E-3) Under decentralized promotion system, the unit, or company, is the promotion authority. In theory, the commander decides who gets promoted and who doesnt. In actuality, because there are no quotas for promotion for E-2s and E-3s, commanders pretty much promote everyone who meets the criteria, barring any egregious violations. The promotion criteria are set by the Marine Corps to ensure that the promotion flow remains stable, and everyone (regardless of MOS) can expect to be promoted in the same (approximate) time-frame. Marine Corps Promotion Criteria The promotion criteria for promotion to the ranks of E-2 to E-3 are: Private First Class (E-2) - Six months Time-In-Service (TIS) with six months Time-In-Grade (TIG)Lance Corporal (E-3) - Nine months TIS and eight months TIG The promotions to E-4 and above in the Marine Corps are competitive. That means there are only so many vacancies in each grade (above E-3) in each MOS (job). Corporal (E-4) - 12 months TIS and 8 months TIGSergeant (E-5) - 24 months TIS and 12 months TIG For E-6 through E-9 promotions, the Commandant of the Marine Corps convenes a promotion board once per year. In order to be eligible to be considered for promotion by the board, Marines must meet the following Time-in-Service (TIS) and Time-in-Grade (TIG) requirements: Staff Sergeant (E-6) - 4 years TIS and 24 months TIGGunnery Sergeant (E-7) - 6 years TIS and 3 years TIGMaster Sergeant/First Sergeant (E-8) - 8 years TIS and 4 years TIGMaster Gunnery Sergeant/Sergeant Major (E-9) - 10 years TIS and 3 years TIG The Difference in the USMC E-8 (Master Sergeant and First Sergeant) Master Sergeants and First Sergeants in the Marine Corps are paid the same (both are E-8s). However, the First Sergeant has a much larger degree of authority and responsibility. The First Sergeant wears special rank (with a diamond) and is the top enlisted leader in the unit. First sergeants work directly for the unit commander and are responsible for the morale, welfare, and discipline of all of the enlisted members assigned to the unit. When you are an E-7 Gunnery Sergeant you will indicate on your proficiency reports whether you wish to be considered for promotion as a Master Sergeant or as a First Sergeant. Professional Military Education (PME) In addition to the Time-in-Service and Time-in-Grade requirements, NCOs must complete designated Professional Military Education (PME) courses in order to be eligible for promotion: Staff Sergeant (E-6) - The Marine Noncommissioned Officer (MCI) Course, The Noncommissioned Officer Basic Nonresident Program, or The Sergeants Nonresident Program/Sergeants Distance Education ProgramGunnery Sergeant (E-7) - Senior NCO (SNCO) Career Nonresident Program/SNCO Career Distance Education ProgramMaster Sergeant (E-8) - The SNCO Advanced Nonresident Program/SNCO Advanced Distance Education Program and The Warfighting Skills ProgramFirst Sergeant (E-8) - Either the SNCO Career Nonresident Program/SNCO Career Distance Education Program or The SNCO Resident Course, and The SNCO Advanced Nonresident Program/SNCO Advanced Distance Education Program, and The Warfighting Skills Program, and The Staff Noncommissioned Officer Advanced Resident Course Successful completion of Drill Instructor, Recruiter or Marine Security Guard school in the grades of corporal through gunnery sergeant can replace the requirement to complete resident PME courses, including the SNCO Advanced Resident course, provided the Marine has also completed the appropriate nonresident program. How the Promotion Board Works The Marine Corps Promotion Board takes all the selectees (without regard to MOS), and gives them a promotion sequence number, which is assigned according to seniority. For example, if its the E-7 list, the Marines will give the lowest sequence number (0001) to the E-7 selected with the most time-in-grade as an E-6. Each month, for the next 12 months, the Marines will then release the sequence numbers of those to be promoted during that month. This ensures a smooth promotion flow for the following 12 months when the next board will meet and do everything all over again. Meritorious Promotions in the Marines In addition to the normal promotion system and below-the-zone early promotions, commanders can promote a very few, outstanding Marines via the Meritorious Promotion System. Marines can be promoted up to the rank of E-8 under this system. Promotions to the rank of First Sergeant (E-8), however, cannot be made by meritorious promotion. Additionally, meritorious promotions to Master Sergeant (E-8) are limited to Marines in the Drill Instructor and Recruiter of the Year Programs. There are only minimum Time-in-Grade (TIG) requirements for meritorious promotions. They are the following: Private First Class (E-2) - No TIS requirements necessaryLance Corporal (E-3) - No TIS requirements necessaryCorporal (E-4) - 6 months TIS** Sergeant (E-5) - 18 months TISStaff Sergeant (E-6) - 4 years TISGunnery Sergeant (E-7) - 6 Years TIS** Master Sergeant (E-8) - 8 years TIS Meritorious promotions are not used as rewards or when a personal commendation/award is appropriate. A meritorious promotion is based entirely on the Marine’s demonstrated capability to discharge the responsibilities and duties of the higher grade in a satisfactory manner. Combat Meritorious Promotion Program Commanding generals may award combat meritorious promotions to Private First Class (E-2) through Sergeant (E-5) in numbers that do not exceed the quarterly meritorious promotion allocations established by the Marine Corps Commandants Office. In the cases of Sergeants (E-5) and Staff Sergeants (E-6), commanding generals make recommendations to the Commandants office who approve or disapprove the recommendations for combat meritorious promotion based on meritorious action and performance in combat or performance under combat conditions. Determination of eligibility for promotion will be based on the command’s recommendation, combat performance, and past military record. Promotion Averages How long does it take to get promoted in the Marine Corps? Remember, its dependent on the particular MOS (job) and how many vacancies there are in that job. On average, one can expect to be promoted with the following time-in-service: Private First Class (E-2) - 6 monthsLance Corporal (E-3) - 14 monthsCorporal (E-4) - 26 monthsSergeant (E-5) - 4.8 yearsStaff Sergeant (E-6) - 10.4 yearsGunnery Sergeant (E-7) - 14.8 yearsMaster Sergeant/First Sergeant (E-8) - 18.8 yearsMaster Gunnery Sergeant/Sergeant Major (E-9) - 22.1 years
